I love tea, particularly English Breakfast. It’s part of fabric of my day. My morning ritual. My afternoon pick me up. It solves problems. It’s hard to explain, but if your mother is British then you know.
Here’s the trouble with tea. It may be heavily sprayed with pesticides and the bags often have plastic or glue in them. So putting them in hot water and then drinking it isn’t ideal. Rituals are hard to mess with and leaving a favorite brand it hard to do. First I tried a few different organic tea brands and when I wasn’t sure about their bags I directly messaged them and got the scoop. If you want to know what a brand is doing, just ask! Most of the time you can actually get a person to answer you and they’re happy to if they have a good answer. Choice Organic Tea is the one I used the most.
Same thing with coffee. Some days it feels like the only worthwhile reason to get out of bed. It’s another way to go zero waste first thing in the morning.
Get to it: Zero Waste Coffee and Tea
Buy organic. It’s important for you, the workers, and the environment
Use well filtered water. We have this filter.
Buy loose tea and use a mini french press or a tea infuser. I use one like this.
Buy organic powdered teas. I like this chai and this matcha.
Use a french press or infuser for coffee. Pour it into a carafe or insulated mug to keep it hot.
When camping we use an Aeropress because it just uses one tiny filter.
If you like drip, you can use a reusable filter. If you like pods, use a reusable pod.
Choose organic creamers or milks. Organic oat milk is hard to find, and oats are often heavily sprayed. My favorite is RISE Brewing Co.
Make your own milks. I’m trying to do this more so I can use quality filtered water. My favorite DIY milk for coffee and tea is this one by Minimalist Baker. I love it for chai and matcha lattes.
