Do you love those Pinterest photos of drawers that are beautifully organized grab and go granola bars and snacks? There is so much satisfaction in unloading a box of 24 bars into those bins that are ready for the taking. Yes! Me too! Or I used to… because then it hit me… that’s a lot of single use packaging.
Cutting convenient snacks feels like a huge sacrifice for your sanity, because it saves us so much time. And the kids will freak without their Goldfish packs. But it can be done and kids are more flexible than we think.
I used to buy granola bars by the case, but one day I just stopped ordering them. Yes, I had to explain myself, but it didn’t take long for them to get over it.
Here’s how to tackle your pantry. Take an inventory of your snacks. Are they healthy? Are they individually packaged? Can you buy in bulk or bigger sizes? Can you make them? (Will you make them?) Or can you just ditch them?
Honestly, the easiest way is to cut them loose. Cold turkey. Be ruthless. But no judgment if you need to do it little at a time. I get it. You don’t want a mutiny, but if you jut stop buying them they become a thing of the past.
🥨 Buy the biggest bags you can find and portion into reusable bags. (Do the math on these… it’s way cheaper).
🥨 Buy trail mix items and make your own. Include good quality chocolate chips!
🥨 DIY the easiest breakfast cookies, granola bars and protein bars you can find. Or a copy cat recipe of your favorite that you want to replace. They are all over the internet.
🥨 Buy reusable squeeze pouches and fill with applesauce, smoothies or blended frozen fruit. You can find silicone and BPA free plastic ones. Those pouches are primarily applesauce anyway, if you check the ingredients!
🥨 Cut cheese into cubes or sticks to replace string cheese.
If your kids help themselves, make these accessible to them. Our nuts and raisins and things are all at kid height. If you’re looking at making things, have them help! Let them help you prep for the week. Mine don’t always go for that but when they do it’s a lot of fun.
Set the snacks free!
